Home to a little over 173,000 permanent residents, St Lucia dates back to 200 A.D., with the Europeans first discovering the island in the 16th century.
The Dutch were the first settlers to start a camp, opening what is now known as Vieux Fort. The English were soon to arrive, followed by the French, who wanted control of the island for themselves. Their arrival was an event that sparked 14 Anglo-French wars and lead to the island changing hands several times. This period of British and French rule (they each held the island seven times) has impacted the legacy of St Lucia, evident in everything from settlement names to the presence of Creole dialect and the use of French and English spoken throughout.
The abundance of natural rain-forest and waterfalls in St Lucia has prohibited mass development, meaning the island has maintained feelings of exclusivity and privacy. The island’s capital is Castries, home to a third of the island’s population along with a bustling cruise port that routinely welcomes large liners carrying visitors to the island. From here, it is also possible for locals to find water taxis for easy island hopping, and excursions out to sea to indulge in activities such as reef-diving, snorkeling and scuba diving.
